You write three paragraphs, glance up, and realise caps lock was on the whole time. Or you copy a column of product names from a spreadsheet and half of them are in capitals, the other half in lowercase.

Retyping is the slow way out. This guide shows the fast way: how to change text case online in one click, which style to pick for which job, and a few small traps to avoid (like losing the capital letters on names).

The quick fix: change case in 3 steps

Open the Rumeq Case Converter.

Paste your text into the Input Text box.

Click the style you want, then use Copy to Clipboard or Download Text.

That’s it. The conversion happens in your browser, so your text isn’t sent anywhere. Character, word, sentence and line counts update as you work, which is handy if you’re writing to a limit.

Which case style should you use?

The tool has eight styles. Here’s what each one does and when it’s the right pick.

Style

Example

Best for

Sentence case

hELLO there. Sentence case lowercases everything first, then capitalises the first letter of the text and of each sentence that follows a full stop, question mark or exclamation mark. So names, cities, brands and the word “I” will come out in lowercase. A quick scan to put those capitals back takes a minute and saves you from sending an email that says “hi ahmed, i will meet you in lahore.”

Sentence case vs Title Case: what’s the difference?

Use sentence case for normal writing. Only the first word of each sentence gets a capital.

Use Title Case for headlines. It capitalises the main words and leaves small words in lowercase, such as a, an, and, as, at, but, by, for, if, in, nor, of, on, or, so, the, to, up and yet. The first and last words are always capitalised, which is why “the lord of the rings” becomes “The Lord of the Rings” and not “The Lord Of The Rings.”

Capitalized Case is different again. It capitalises every word, small ones included. That’s fine for a list of names, but it can look off in a headline.

One honest note: style guides (AP, Chicago, APA) don’t all agree on which small words stay lowercase. If your publication follows a specific guide, give the result a quick look before you publish.

From headline to web address in two clicks

If you publish blog posts, you’ve probably had to turn a title into a URL by hand. The converter does both:

Paste your headline and click Title Case. Copy it into your CMS as the post title.

Click URL Slug on the same text. Copy the result into the permalink field.

The slug option lowercases the text, removes apostrophes, turns every run of spaces and symbols into a single hyphen, and trims hyphens from the start and end. Letters and numbers from other languages are kept, so it won’t wipe out a title written in a non-English script.

Short, readable slugs are easier to share and easier for people to understand at a glance. If your headline is long, trim it first.

Cleaning up a list from a spreadsheet

Paste a column of product names, categories or labels that don’t match, then click Capitalized Case or lower case. Every line gets the same treatment.

The line counter under the box is a useful check. If you pasted 120 rows, it should say 120. Then use Download Text to save the cleaned list as a TXT file (it’s saved as convert-case.txt).

Mistakes to avoid

No undo button. Each click replaces the text in the box, and styles stack on top of one another. Keep a copy of the original before you start, or you can’t get the old capitalisation back.

Converting twice. If you click UPPER CASE and then Sentence case, you’re working on the already-changed text. That’s usually fine, but check the result.

Forgetting proper nouns. As mentioned, sentence case and lower case remove capitals from names. Fix those by hand.

Abbreviations and the sentence count. The counter splits sentences at full stops, so something like “Dr.” can push the sentence count a little higher than you’d expect.

Using alternating or inverse case for real work. They’re fun, but they’re not meant for anything you want people to take seriously.

FAQs

How do I convert text to uppercase or lowercase online? Paste the text into the box and click UPPER CASE or lower case. The whole text changes at once.

Does the tool upload my text? No. The conversion runs in your browser on the page itself, so nothing has to be submitted.

Can I undo a conversion? Not with a button. Keep the original somewhere else, or paste it back if you change your mind. The Clear button empties the box and resets all four counters.

How does it count words and sentences? Words are groups of characters separated by spaces, and lines are counted by line breaks. Sentences are counted by splitting at full stops, question marks and exclamation marks. Characters include spaces.

Is it free? Yes, the tool is free and needs no signup.

Try it on your own text

The easiest way to see the difference between the styles is to paste one sentence and click through all eight. Open the Rumeq Case Converter, try it, and keep the one that fits.

If you’re also tidying up pasted text, the Remove Text Formatting tool clears rich-text styling, extra punctuation and stray line breaks. You can browse everything else on the Rumeq tools page.

We’ve all done it.
